“Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
These words by the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel summarize how I feel about printmaking, art and life. The smell of the materials, the feel of the paper and the physicality of creating and pulling a print invoke in me the intensity necessary to become a successful printmaker and artist. Many believe this more contemporary approach to traditional printmaking processes has gotten lost with the increased use of digital techniques. This friction has inspired me to work towards a balance between traditional and digital processes and is one of the reasons I continue working with both together.
Through the use of digital manipulation I layer vintage photographs, hand-drawn elements, found textures and stains as I strive to convey a sense of sentimentality and nostalgia through my work. My themes tend to center on searching and seeking both within and outside of myself. As I realize these visual thoughts and ideas, I am challenged and engaged and consider my prints to be both a physical and psychological extension of myself.
